This is mainly used to separate nails, screws, staples and other metal objects present in the wood chips.

Metal detectors - Removing Impurities from Chips

Metal fragments have caused considerable damage in mills, shredders, conveyors belts, and other process equipment, causing great expense for repairs, production losses, and major investment in spare parts. Detecting metal fragments in logs prior to processing prevents costly damage to the machines.

In the wood chipper, the metal detector is installed in the chip feed hopper conveyor, making it possible to identify any metal parts that are in the feed hopper, thus protecting the knives, counter knives, rotor and shaft of the chopper against accidents, depending on the size of metal. The detector operates by disconnecting the fuel feed when necessary.
